Joegoldsteinite: A new sulfide mineral (MnCr2S4) from the Social Circle IVA iron meteorite
Joegoldsteinite, a new sulfide mineral of end-member formula MnCr2S4, was discovered in the Social Circle IVA iron meteorite. It is a thiospinel, the Mn analog of daubréelite (FeCr2S4), and a new member of the linnaeite group. Tiny grains of joegoldsteinite were also identified in the Indarch EH4 enstatite chondrite. The chemical composition of the Social Circle sample determined by electron mi...
متن کاملRelationship between iron-meteorite composition and size: Compositional distribution of irons from North Africa
During the past three decades many iron meteorites have been collected from the deserts of North Africa. Almost all are now characterized, and the distribution among classes is found to be very different from those that were in museums prior to the collection of meteorites from hot and cold (Antarctica) deserts. Similar to the iron meteorites from Antarctica, the irons from Northwest Africa inc...
متن کاملButler, missouri: an unusual iron meteorite.
The Butler iron meteorite has been found to have, with respect to other iron meteorites, an unusually high cobalt content (1.4 percent by weight), unusually high germanium contents in the kamacite and the taenite phases, and an unusually low cooling rate (0.5 degrees C/10(6) years). It is suggested that Butler formed in a different environment from that of the rest of the iron meteorites.
متن کاملMurchisite, Cr5S6, a new mineral from the Murchison meteorite
Murchisite (IMA 2010-003), Cr5S6, is a new chromium sulfide mineral, discovered in the Murchison CM2 meteorite. The type material occurs as one subhedral crystal (1.3 × 4 mm in size) in contact with low-Ni iron (“kamacite”), martensitic iron, schreibersite, and a Ca-,Al-rich glass, all of which are included in an isolated forsteritic olivine grain in the meteorite’s matrix. The mean chemical co...
متن کاملTistarite, Ti2O3, a new refractory mineral from the Allende meteorite
Tistarite, ideally Ti2O3, is a new member of the corundum-hematite group. It is found as one subhedral crystal in a cluster of micrometer-sized refractory grains along with khamrabaevite (TiC), rutile, and corundum crystals within a chondrule from the Allende meteorite. The mean chemical composition determined by electron microprobe analysis is (wt%) Ti2O3 94.94, MgO 2.06, Al2O3 1.50, ZrO2 0.44...
